Raines Family

Originally from the poor outskirts of magical Chicago, the Raines family rose to social prominence in one generation because of the ambitions and abilities of Miles Raines during the '20s. Through his efforts, those of his brother and sister, and his careful selection of spouses for himself and his five children, he had, before his death, his family quite firmly entrenched in the upper class.

After his death, however, things began to fall apart. His heir was his twenty-year-old son, Charles. As the second son - he was the fourth of the five children; his ex-brother Benjamin was the second - his education had been largely humanistic rather than political, and he was beset by anxiety management issues and a strong belief in his own incompetence. His wife Lila, who he had acquired against both of their wills, was as young, pretty, and vivacious as she was immature and spoiled. Charles' strategy for dealing with their relationship was to avoid Lila. Lila's was to have an affair with the family's Muggleborn gardener, Nick.

Things blew up unexpectedly in the spring of -10 SA when Charles' old-maid sister, India, accidentally discovered her sister-in-law's secret and proceeded to tell everyone she could get to listen about it. Among those she informed was her brother, who had been growing progressively fonder of his wife since she announced her pregnancy before Christmas. Though the situation proved mostly salvageable and Charles claimed the baby girl he named Catherine, the scandal and his initial reaction did an effective job of destroying the marriage in everything but name.

Things have just been getting worse ever since.

Forwynt Family

Located in North Dakota, the Forwynts were one of the first magical families to settle there, a distinction earned not so much by a pioneering spirit as the first Forwynt immigrant to the New World hating all Muggles while being practical enough to realize there were too many of them to fight. It would be another three generations before his descendants came to see anything pleasant about being away from the by-then-much-expanded family home, which bore a distinct resemblance to a castle, and two after that before a second son relocated permanently.

Once the leading family in the area, the Forwynt influence has declined somewhat over the past hundred years. A family where no one may be the heir until he has a son of his own to prevent the estates from falling into the female line, they have not adjusted well to even the most minor of social changes that lead to greater rights for Muggles, Muggleborns, "new" purebloods, the bourgeoisie, and witches. The decline in the number of male births over the past twenty years has not helped matters, either. The family has, however, remained 'a presence' in the northern United States, particularly in "their" state.

The Forwynt Story

John Forwynt married and was dominated by Alberta, a severe, ambitious witch who only reluctantly accepted being an éminence grise. Their marriage produced three children: Margaret, John II, and Eleanor. Margaret and Eleanor married Some Pureblooded Men. John II married Isabel, a great beauty of good means and questionable virtue, and had four children: Maximilian, Helena, Isabel, and John III. Helena married Some Pureblooded Man and lived to a happy old age. Isabel, the fragile inheritrix of her mother's good looks, did neither.

Tree One: John-John III

Maximilian married Charlotte, a gentle, motherly witch dedicated to the ideal of ladyhood who his father thought would have a good influence on him. She failed in that task, but the marriage remained peaceful because Maximilian stayed gone too much for his boredom with his wife to turn into animosity. They had two children, Chauncey and Amelia. A month after Chauncey's wedding, Charlotte died of wizard's flu; two months after that, Maximilian married his Greek mistress, Marina. The result was a daughter, Geneva, and four years of abandon before Maximilian also died and had his last fling with scandal by leaving Marina and Amelia some of the most valuable family holdings, slightly heir Chauncey and Geneva alike. Marina, prohibited from doing so without losing her inheritance, never remarried but did indulge in serial casual dalliances for years. Amelia married Miles Raines, to general consternation. Geneva may or may not have married Some Pureblooded Man.

Tree Two: Maximilian-Geneva

Chauncey married Adeline, leading to a long and unhappy relationship between them marked by her jealousy over his sister’s influence on him. Nevertheless, the couple did their duty and produced two children, Matthias and Chauncey II. Matthias, the elder and more practical of the two, showed a very uncharacteristic level of irrationality when he fell passionately in love with and married Elizabeth without family approval. The Forwynts accepted the marriage readily enough, however, until it became evident that Elizabeth could not have children. Matthias refused all encouragement to divorce her and went into semi-retirement. Chauncey II reluctantly married Susan and had three children, Miranda, Leanne, and Chauncey III. Miranda is married with a child, Leanne married without one, and Chauncey the subject of many familial attempts to secure a good engagement.

Tree Three: Chauncey-Chauncey III

Heading back up the family tree, Maximilian's brother John III married Sarah and had three sons: Maximilian II, Frederick, and John IV. Maximilian II and his wife Laura entered a calm, reasonably content match that produced one child, Miles. Frederick was briefly married to Emma, who died in an accident shortly after their wedding without having any children; consumed with grief, Frederick refused to consider remarriage or even basic social participation and went into seclusion, studying and writing poetry that, though he was never completely aware of it, made him famous. John IV married Scottish pureblood Muriel, who he met during a post-Salem Tour of Europe. Their children were Melinda, Michael, Hugh, and Verdi, breaking the chain of Johns. Melinda married Some Pureblooded Man. Verdi, whose family is more or less aware of his homosexuality but finds it easier to ignore it as long as he avoids scandal, has so far avoided Muriel’s well-meaning efforts to find him a wife, but has had increasing pressure put on him to produce heirs since one brother was disowned and the other's marriage produced nothing but girls.

Tree Four: John III-Verdi

Miles married Marie-Caroline, a bored socialite of just-better-than-lukewarm-means. They get along tolerably well and have two children, Hope and Arthur.

Tree Five: Miles-Arthur

Michael made a love-match with Aurora Wright, which – with the Elizabeth incident of the other side of the family still fresh in everyone’s memory on top of Aurora’s family’s position in society – got him disowned. Not too surprised or dreadfully upset about this - he had been drifting away from the family for years - he absconded with a few family heirlooms and assistance from Muriel and relocated to South Dakota, where he had two children, Patrick and Annika. He and Aurora are prominent community figures in the small magical town of [name to be announced].

Tree Six: Michael-Annika

Hugh, like Michael, married for love, but his decision to become widow Carolyn's second husband was viewed as more acceptable by the family, not least because they all knew a flobberworm would be elected President before Verdi got married without John or Muriel resorting to the Imperius Curse. Hugh and Carolyn tried for years to produce the son they needed to move up in the ranks of the family, but gave up after five daughters - it was too expensive. Their children are Alicia, Emma, Susan, Elizabeth, and Honora.

Brockert Family

The Brockerts first came out west in the 1820's, escaping persecution at the hands of religious zealot muggles and looking for adventure. They settled in what today is Colorado, where they were among its founding magical families and remain there until this day for the most part as one of the state's most prominent families.

As a whole, the Brockerts have a long history of feuding with Muggle religious groups. It began back in Europe with the christianization of Northern Europe and the British Isles. The family refused to conform to what they believed were silly and nonsensical ideas and clung stubbornly to old ways such as using the old Runes. Eventually they got tired of people trying to kill them and make them conform and fled to America. Unfortunately, the religious groups eventually followed and it just started up again. At this time, the Brockerts used the Runes as sort of a secret code thing, to hide stuff from their muggle oppressors. One openly defiant member of the family, Lilith Brockert, used them to curse Puritans.

The current patriarch is Clifford Brockert I. He and his wife, Antonia, had two children, Frank and Amelia. Frank married a woman named Penelope and they had three children, Rosemary, Clifford II and James. Clifford died in an accident at age 15, which Frank blames on the Mormons, somehow.

The Brockerts used to arrange marriages for their children like many pureblood families. However, after Rosemary's disasterous arranged marriage to Liam Ferguson, Frank felt guilty and renounced this practice. It was too late for Rosemary, who'd had three children with Liam, named Lucy, Oliver and Marshall. Lucy is married to Marcus Dobson and has a daughter named Nora. Oliver is married to Jessica Parker.

James Brockert, or Jim, as he preferred to be called, married Isabella Crandall, from a pureblood family based in Northern California and Oregon. They moved to Portland, Oregon and had six children, Kaylie, Adam, Chelsea, Nina, Hope and Evan. After Clifford I and Frank kick the bucket, Jim is obligated to move back to Colorado, but this will most likely not be happening for a long time, as Clifford is still perfectly physically and mentally fit and Frank, while there are some doubts about his sanity, is in robust health.

Amelia Brockert married Owen Collins and moved to Pennsylvania. They had a son named Gary. (See Collins family for more information.)

Clifford I also has a brother named Hugo and a sister named Theadra.

Hugo's son Ezra has three children, Margo, Adrian and Reuben.

Adrian first married Natasha and produced a daughter, Melora who is a freshman Sultana at Sapienti University of Magic. After Natasha's death, Adrian married Claudia and had two daughters, Pippa and Tawny. Reuben has a son, Angus. Margo chose not to marry.

Hugo's youngest, Otis married Enid and had a few children, the oldest two are Timothy ("Tim") and Pearl and the youngest is Jana. Tim has a daughter named Arabella.Pearl married a pureblood named Jeffrey O'Malley and had two children, Ryan and Carrie.

Theadra married into the pureblood Melcher family of Dubuque, Iowa. Two of her great-grandchildren are Quentin and Kirstenna Melcher.

Clifford I, Hugo and Theadra's mother, Gwendolyn is stil alive but very old and senile.

The line of sucession in the Brockert family mimics that of the British Royal family. There is also a branch of the family in either Delaware or Massachusettes that is only minorly related to the Colorado branch and not usually the branch that it thought of when the Brockerts are mentioned.

The Brockerts are a wealthy and primarily respectable pureblood family that just happens to be given to eccentricity, bordering in some cases to flat out insanity.

Afton Stokes

Hello, I'm Afton Stokes. I'm a Sal Salis at Salem. My house is considered the crazy house but I am perfectly sane. However, people do consider me a bit strange, just because I happen to be really into crime. Not that I'm a criminal, I just like reading about serial killers a lot. My favorite book is Helter Skelter. That's also my favorite movie. (The 1976 version, not the 2003 version.) I also like frogs and have a pet frog named Arabella. Oh, and I love being magical and going to a magical school, except the part where T.V doesn't work.

I live in Rhode Island, the smallest state and the home of the show Family Guy, with my parents, Josh and Denise, my older brother Craig and my adopted younger sister Molly. My dad is an electrical engineer and I have no idea exactly what he does. He explained it to me by saying he designed what is essentially toxic waste. Dad lacks most social skills. My mother is a probation officer. She meets all sorts of interesting people, whom she really won't let me talk to. My brother is fairly ordinary and annoying, like most brothers. He likes robots a lot. Molly is also very normal, compared to the rest of my family. This is why she's clearly adopted.

My mother's family is weird too. My grandpa is awesome and taught my mother, who in turn taught me, about politics. It can be summed up in one sentence "Democrats good, Republicans bad." He didn't used to belive in magic but now has to acknowledge it exists. He's really tolerant of it though. My grandma is less cool. She has a short temper and thinks I'm creepy, first because of the crime thing and then because of the magic thing. She won't let my mom and me talk about serial killers at the table. In turn, my mother insists that my Uncle Larry takes a shower. We call him "Dirty Larry" because he rarely does so. He's incredibly strange and seems to enjoy being so.

My friends at school are Grendle Rosethorn, Lucy Harrison, Kane Sato, Vittoria Tolland and Wyatt Witteck. Lucy and Grendle are my fellow Gremlins. We inherited the title from Derry Pierce and his friends who graduated last year. Rosalind Rabindra would be a friend but I'm not sure she likes me very much.

My dislikes include writing essays and research papers. Unless maybe about crime or serial killers. I could write a really cool paper on Charles Manson but since I'm at Salem, that's unlikely to happen. I did write a report on BTK once when I was in elementary and we had to write reports on a famous person. I got sent to guidance for that.When I get older, I want to work as a lawyer because I love debating stuff that I feel is unjust.

Cornelius, or Corky, Robertson is the son of a Muggleborn witch (Ashley Right) and a Muggle man (Drake Robertson). He lives in New Jersey, near Alvalon with his parents, grandmother Betty, and Aunt Rene as well as her daughter, Irene (or Rini).

Corky is a smart boy who adores anything to do with space. When he found Salem didn't have a Astronomy class, he was very upset. There is nothing that boy wants more than to be an Astronomer.
Drake and Rene were the ones who got Corky into the sciences, both being Physicists themselves (which was how Ashley and Drake met, through Ashley's sister).

Corky is a Caelum at Salem. He has dark blonde hair and blue eyes hidden by small glasses. He is a fairly happy bouncy boy and normally seems very immature until you put him in front of a telescope. Then he's all focus. Corky loves parties and crowds and many people. He also likes the beach a lot, since he grew up around there.

He and his cousin get along fairly well, but Rini is slightly jealous that Corky is a Wizard and she isn't.

Casiphia Wiess, called Casi, is an easily frightened child. She is total albino, with the white skin and hair and pink eyes. She has awful eyesight as is one result from total albinism.
She finds herself a freak because her father left (really he died in a car crash trying to get to the hospital, her mother just says she left) becasue of her and her mother can't bear to touch her. Casi's mother calls her names and when she is not ignoring her, is very cruel to her.

Casi will often refer to herself as the Ghost and hides herself in heavy black clothing. For this, her mother also calls her a vampire wench.

Casi often thinks of what her mother has said about her, and calls it to herself. She believes herself to be a ghost and doesn't find herself worthy of people's kindness. Even if someone was nice, she'd fear that they'd say cruel words to her again.

She is a Terrigena at Salem. Though she doesn't feel she belongs there. Then again, she doesn't believe she belongs anywhere. Casi believes highly in angels.

Vittoria is of Italian origin. She has black hair and blue eyes. Her hair reaches to about mid-back length. She also has olive skin.

She is very shy and jumpy at first, when she first meets people she will stutter more often than not. She's an easy follower and fairly quiet. She doesn't normally speak her mind a lot. She does, however, have good intuition and knows when things are dangerous and wrong. It may be mistaken for some sort of seeing ability.

She doesn't know of her birth parents, they left her in an orphanage when she was born. She was adopted by a man by the name of Carlos Tolland. They became very close and she didn't even care that he wasn't really her father. Her father started dating her old, least favorite, teacher. The two were married with baby in her second year, and Vittoria felt left out. So she ran away before third year and missed it. Vittoria found herself with the Ricchettos, an Italian Wizarding family in Massachusetts. They sent her to Salem to go through school. She is currently redoing the third year she missed as a Terrigena in Salem.

Vittoria has led a sort of lonley life. She was in an orphanage until she was eight, and not many people liked her there since she was so quiet. When she met Carlos Tolland she got used to not being alone and never wanted that again. She hated school, especially Miss Vitte's class.

Elodie Carmella, an Aether at Salem, finds herself the cream of the crop and perfect by nature. Being pureblooded, she thinks she is superior over Half and Muggle borns when it comes to magic and about everything else. She thinks the same over most other purebloods, even those at higher social status than her.

In reality, Elodie is an annoying little pureblood princess. She is awful at magic, and her spells backfire (which she blames on her "faulty wand"). Her family only recently became on the pureblood radar some years ago, making her lower than those ancient pureblood families. And worst of all, she has "valley girl" dialect so bad it even makes her cousins' ears bleed.

Her speech is coated with "likes" and "totallys" and "so rights" that her parents find it hard to stop her. At parties they even tell her "Yes or no answers only, Elodie".

Elodie doesn't believe in WAIL or DISCUSS and thinks both are highly useless. Sports are a stupid thing to fight over is what she believes. Who cares what happens in them? She thinks what's more important was showing yourself in good light, not stupid. Entrances in parties with dress robes she makes herself.
That's one good thing she can do at least. She can make nice clothes, often hating everyone else's.

Basically Elodie is a prissy little pureblood prima donna who thinks she's amazing.

Wyatt is currently a second year at Salem, and has an instant dislike for his roommates. And a sort of friendship with one Jay D'Amico. He also has a twin sister. Their parents are divorced Muggles. Their father is this super rich lawyer in LA. Their mother is a good Banker there too, so they pretty much have it made. Wyatt was never as smart as his sister, but he was quite a deal more threatening. He is the typical overprotective brother, he won't allow people near his sister. Especially if they're boys. Allen, their father, enjoys this.

Wyatt is not a big fan of sports. Playing soccer for three years was enough for him. And unlike some people, he really wasn't too bitter that he didn't make the Quidditch Team. Honestly, Wyatt would probably slack off anyway. Unless he was a Beater... then I would probably just whip the metal ball at his teammates thinking it would be funny.

He can be quiet or loud, depending on his mood. When he's fairly pleased with his day, Wyatt is very quiet, believing that speaking can ruin a mood. When angered, he is loud and bitter, shouting at people and things. He is also loud to those he really doesn't like, yelling at them. This often happens around Faye's older friend, Anthony.

Hello!

Renaye Warren here. First thing you need to know about me is that my brother, Josh, and I are inseperable. No kidding. We're like twins. Second thing you might want to know, Josh and I were born into a family chalk-full of Quidditch, and we embraced it. Will and Claera started off their business before we were born. It was going great. They traveled the world and threw themselves into their work, not they call it "work." Engineering brooms and advertising Quidditch supplies/brooms/equipment was, and is, fun to them. They love it. So then, little Joshie and Raye came along. People say everything changes with a baby. Well they got two and nothing changed. I mean, they have more responsibility than work now. Is shipping your newborn twins from country to country really a good idea? What kind of parents did they think they were? And then Elaina came along. We were five. Elaina was so close to being born in France. But we had flown in for... I dunno, something work-related. And forceful Elaina took advantage of it. So it wasn't until a few years ago (year before Sonora) that we made our residence in the States permanent. We lodged up with Uncle Mike and Irene (got to love that girl). But ever since our departing from Mom and Dad, we haven't really seen them. We saw them for... 12 hours, maybe? on Christmas. When they shipped us to Japan because they couldn't get away from work. B.S. They didn't want to get away from work. Where was I going before this rant? Right. Quidditch.

Quidditch is a passion that Josh and I share. Josh a little *cough* a lot more than me. So that speaks volumes for him. Being twins, it's only fitting that we're both Beaters! Kidding. We're Beaters because we love it. Josh is spectacular. He is the Buddah of Quidditch. Me? I play for the love of the game. Question me about it. Tell me I shouldn't play because I'm a girl. And I'll laugh as you watch my game thrive off your critisism. Advice? Don't bug me about it and there won't be a problem.

Roxie Kent (Mom): Mom is awesome. We get along great. She's a movie producer so that might help explain the odd name.

Lucas Kent (Dad): Dad is a stuntman. If you look through the credits for So You Want to be a Fugitive you'll see his name under STUNTS. He's... my Dad. He's really cool at times. He takes me to the set every now and then when he think I'd get along with some of the cast. Other times he's this crazymasculine "I am man, hear me roar. Now make me dinner" sort of guy. When he gets like that I tell him to lay off, which results in "Be a man, Kyler!" ... Sure, Dad. I'll get right on that.

So to avoid those little conflicts, I chill with the better half of the relationship: I get to go with Mom to her sets every once in a while. It's pretty cool (especially when the premieres come rolling around! Can you say all night party?). Roxie is all business at work (which still has quite a bit of her humor to it), but when we're sitting at home staring at the TV bored out of our minds she's always the one to jump up and say "Want to have a free-sample luncheon at Costco?" Of course!

I'm not that great at magic, as I'm figuring out this year. I'm pretty much only good at social stuff. *shrug* I guess I could always be a car salesman? ... Yeah, no.

Hobbies: So we live right near the Rockies. Literally, the mountains are out backyard. How can you live next door to the biggest mountain chain on the continent and not try to climb it? Rock climbing; I love it.

Goals: Now where would I be able to find a really big mountain? It would be so cool to climb some insane mountain. Maybe the the tallest in the world? Where could I find one? ................ Mt. Everest. There is my ultimate goal. I have my whole life ahead of me to climb that rock, and I don't plan on waiting that long.

Fears: I didn't say anything. This does not go beyond here. Ever. *sigh* I have Achluophobia, which is a fancy way of saying... *bigger sigh* A fancy way of saying fear of the dark. Yeah, yea... but I hate not knowing what is around me. It's not like I'm afraid of the Boogeyman or something. I just feel like I'm wrapped in black plastic wrap whenever the room is dark. Appearance

Morgaine is short for her age, barely reaching five feet in shoes and with her best posture, and almost as flat-chested and slim-hipped as she was at eleven. The combination often makes strangers doubt she really is the age she claims she is, a misimpression not helped by her habitual mode of dress: robes over loose, very high-necked blouses, skirts that at least cover her knees, thick white stockings to cover up any remaining leg, and sensible shoes. Her reason for dressing so is twofold: it meets her very strict standards of modesty, and she just doesn't care much about clothes or fashion. She has long, straight dark brown hair she usually wears loose around her shoulders, large eyes that appear either bluish- or greenish-gray depending on how the light takes them, and very small features.

Personality

Although quick enough to flash her temper at anyone she thinks she can or who touches on one of the (very few) topics she has genuine strong feelings about, Morgaine takes a fairly dispassionate view of most things. She generally thinks it's best not to trouble trouble until trouble troubles her and for this reason keeps largely to herself. Since she began her formal schooling, she has developed a desire to attain knowledge for its own sake, particularly knowledge that touches on medicine and Healing. Her interest does not spring from any desire to help people, but instead from her fascination with the power of Healing - the power to correct nature. However, she thoroughly expects and is almost resigned to her adult life being that of a sour-faced maiden aunt living off her younger brother and hounding his children.

Over the years, the embarrassment her family and House caused her as a first year has turned into an odd sort of pride and loyalty. The Pecari reputation for rambunctiousness, the Carey family's reputation for dark characters, and her own branch's reputation for instability and extremity still irk her, but she considers her own inclusion in all three proof that the stereotypes are not strictly accurate, and she wishes to improve all three. Her plans for altering how the world takes the Pecaris involves having the highest grades in her year - an ambition also fueled by her dislike of her year's Crotali and Aladrens. As for the Careys, her secret dream since childhood has been to follow her father as Head of the Savannah Careys in her own right, though she does not expect this to happen - her brother, several cousins, and her sister would need to die first, and they all seem healthy enough to her.

Family Life

Morgaine is the second child and daughter of Alasdair and Lorena Carey and so a fairly high-ranking member of the Savannah Careys. Despite this, a certain distance has existed between her and most of its members most of her life because of the greater prominence of her older sister and younger brother and the belief that she might not keep her opinions to herself in public. She spent her childhood learning what she wanted to from her tutors, listening to gossip, watching with some amusement as her sister and stepcousins played at politics among themselves, writing down the opinions and observations she didn't dare voice in her diaries, and talking to her cat. Since the family entered into its most recent spate of "troubles", she has been forced more and more into public, a major factor in her learning how to step and speak more frequently and carefully, though not to enjoy it. She is currently the only one of their three children who has managed to establish something of a relationship with either parent, though the relationships are strange at best; she has two interviews a year with Alasdair and calls Lorena by her childhood nickname, Cricket, because of their mutual discomfort at Morgaine's attempt to call her 'Mother'.

Friends and Enemies

Morgaine has never made or tried to make friends, and has never really seen what was so bad about the lack. When it comes to most people, Morgaine really doesn't care one way or the other. There are, however, exceptions, even in her age group.

Gwenhwyfar Carey: Gwen is Morgaine's only sister. They have an up-and-down relationship, especially since Gwen took it into her head to be even stupider than usual and get in trouble with the family, but Morgaine is fond of her.

Julian St. Martin V: If he wasn't her stepcousin through his father and an actual, if distant, cousin through his mother, Morgaine might consider marrying him despite his relative lack of prospects. As it is, they get along well.

Alexandra St. Martin: 'Exasperated affection' sums up this relationship nicely, at least on days when Morgaine doesn't suspect Allie's Up to Something.

Adam Whitney: He once asked her for help. She still hasn't figured out why, or what to make of it, but it was a nice change from the normal to have someone not run screaming or try to irk her into a fight, so she still studies him.

Adam Brockert: Morgaine's glad his family doesn't do arranged marriages, because while he's got land and money, he's also the only person she ever met she couldn't even mix dislike with her contempt for.

Connor Pierce: Quite apart from the scandal of a Muggleborn walking around with a pureblooded surname, he's also the Muggleborn who dared to compromise her sister's reputation and then become a prefect. 'Dislike' is far too mild.

Lila St. Martin: She's somewhat taller and a few days older than Morgaine and flaunts it, which would have rankled even if she hadn't been an idiot and a brat with a penchant for snide remarks. Morgaine dreams of seeing her humiliated.

Caedence Redoak: Caedence offended her, offended her sister, and threatened her sister, and all that was before she got Morgaine into trouble with Professors Kiva Kijewski and Marian Connell. Morgaine still holds this against her.

Other

Morgaine's familiar, Isadora, is a large white cat with even less of a liking for people than her mistress. She received the then-kitten as a birthday gift from her "Aunt" (technically step-aunt and seventh cousin, though Careys still consider that a valid relation if the maiden names match) Emma Carey St. Martin, and retains a fondness for cats in general.

Morgaine's collection of diaries dates back years, almost as long as she has known how to write more than her own name out, and started as a tutor-sponsored means of improving her penmanship. Since she would really rather lose them all than risk letting her father see them, she keeps them in a locked trunk with various security measures on it.

Morgaine's disinterest in clothes is a sharp contrast to the way she decorates her room, a mass of frills and lace and floral patterns. When her father dies and her brother (who she imagines should be easy enough to push around) gets control of the money, she plans to arrange for a gardener and fill the grim, fortress-like house with flowers.

She's the one person who knows him like the back of her own hand. Josh likes to think that he knows her pretty well too...

One can have multiple best friends, of course. Josh's best friend who isn't related to him is Laurie Cider. His opinion of her goes a little more than friends. Renaye might know about that, but only because she has an annoyingly good eye for that sort of thing... Nevertheless, as friends, Laurie and the twins have fun no matter what they try to do. That's what he loves about having friends like them. Never a dull moment. His roommate, Zane Cooper is his fellow Quidditch addict and even has famous Quidditch playing relatives! The guy is entertaining though. The two get on well. He went with Renaye to the ball, so Josh was a little weary of him at that point. What? He's protective of his sisters. Zane was his friend though, so he didn't mind so much.

Their first edition promises to provide a wide array of pieces: topical, opinion, and otherwise. Stay tuned for the first edition's release, due in the second term!

Novelling Fury!

Novelling Fury! is a novel writing group started up at Sonora Academy by student Echo Elms in February of his first year.

Original Novelling Fury! Participants and their Novels:

Echo Elms - wrote a story about a cowboy/knight named Canyon who tended dinosaurs and did magic. Canyon ended up dying at the end of the story, much to Echo's dismay.

Saul Pierce - used a quickquotes quill to write his story about Sir Echo and Princess Elly. They got married and lived very happily ever after. Forty-seven verys worth of happily, to be precise, because Saul had a word count goal to meet.

Caedence Redoak - wrote a story about herself, though she didn't recognize herself in it.

Zack Dill - wrote a history about the amazing exploits of the former Headmistress, Lucinda Marnett, in the true story about how she saved the school from aliens, was abducted, then rescued by her faithful plant sidekick, Tony.

The Birth of Novelling Fury!:

One day while doing homework in the Pecari Common Room, Echo looked up from a draft of yet another rejected transfigurations essay, and declared to all present that he was going to write a novel. In a moment of what may have seemed insanity to the other Pecaris, who, if they knew him, were probably under the impression that he was a quiet boy, he leapt up and started a rallying call! It is for this reason suspected that young Echo had been spending too much time around his potions partner, Saul Pierce.

Saul happened to be in the room at the time. Although he had no idea what Echo was proposing he knew that the words "who's with me?" must always be answered with fervour and he cried out, "I am!"

As chance would have it, Caedence Redoak was observing this and, knowing that Echo was wary of her, opted to join too, just to see what it would do to his expression.

Thus was Novelling Fury! born. Echo continued his crusade by enlisting the school's Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, Drake O'Leary as their advisor because he knew that O'Leary would not take any hint of quitting lightly. Echo then began recruiting as many members for his upstart club as he could find. He distributed flying origami posters in Cascade Hall inviting students and teachers alike to show up for a kick-off in Labyrinth Gardens. For all his efforts, attendance was low and only one additional student, Aladren Zack Dill, joined the original three Pecaris.

[The following is an excerpt from the still unpublished biography titled A Grimm History: An American Story. We enter as Lucas Grimm, fourth generation head of the family describes his great grandfather's arrival on the Massachusetts shores.]

". . .rudder snapped, and they were left adrift at sea. His wife was pregnant at the time, nearly full term, and William used the few resources on hand to ensure her survival. A squall struck up and the tiny vessel nearly capsized several times. The boat remained true, however, and in the morning, the tide pulled out and left them on an unknown shore. It reminded a shipmate of Manchester, and so they dubbed it Manchester-by-the-Sea,and in the short years that followed, others joined William in the settlement. Their child was born, my grandfather Phillip, and by age seven, his magic showed itself. Being a squib, William hadn't faith that his son would be carry the full potential despite his wife being a muggleborn witch. When Phillip began maturing, William turned from fishing to a new business. Manchester-by-the-Sea was a town like any other, and its new constituents required identity.

The business began in forgeries, falsifying family ledgers to show longer generations of magical ability, but as the demand grew, William gained new sources back in Europe. It started with a few owls traveling each month, returning with long lost letters and enchanted necklaces that were quickly embraced as proof of pedigree. William's wife birthed four more children during that time, and by the time Phillip was of age, the business had expanded down the coast to Jamestown, the M.B.C, and Charleston. It was Phillip who first found the land that would later hold our family home. Its original walls were laid with the bark still intact, and townsfolk called it the Grimm House. Phillip enjoyed the joke, and so it stayed.

Almost a century later and my father, Edgar, borne to Phillip very late in his life, decided to expand the family fortune by dabbling in the Muggle markets. Edgar was quite the eccentric, but he understood people like no one else. He recognized that the more rich the country grew, the more paranoid its citizen would become. Fearful of their lives, their talents, their bodies; and so he launched an insurance company- an insurance company like no other. He insured anything and everything, except, the mundane. Opera singers insured their vocal chords, boxers their fists- one man insured his thoroughbred poodle's first litter; even more so than before, the money poured in. Poor Phillip could scarcely believe it, but Edgar expanded even further, and when both businesses arrived in my hands, there was little actual work necessary.

Grimm Manor grew to include twelve more wings, and I added a green house for my mother. I did not inherit my father's penchant for brilliance, nor did I receive my grandfather's resilience. I'm afraid I was very much like my mother and preferred the green house to business meetings and socializing. My one stroke of genius came from my marriage to Nora; it was providence indeed that I fell in love with her, for she was ambitious and clever, and under her leadership, the Grimm fortune increased ever further. My John is very much like her, although I've often wondered if it was due to necessity rather than choice. You see. . .Jasper, my poor son, was far too much like myself. He was a dreamer, and because of such fancies, he is gone.

Now, once I am gone, there will only be John and my grandson, Ian, left to continue the family. Ian is the last of Grimms, the very last. . ."
