Savannah Careys

Based in Georgia, and often thought of as the least trustworthy of the five branches with some justification, the third branch American branch of the Carey family, the Savannah Careys, was formed by three first cousins of Thomas Carey, the eldest of whom had tried for and failed to attain the patriarchy of the Virginia Careys after the death of Anthony Carey III. The family is still split into three lines of descent, Richard's line bearing that name and sticking to only children wherever possible, Antonius's line holding onto the branch-patriarchy, and Edwin's line, which effectively ended when his younger daughter married into the patriarchic line of North Carolina Careys and her elder sister never married at all.

The family has four official estates. The patriarch's residence is Bellevue, isolated by its location on an island and added onto as needed or desired by each patriarch. A farmland-surrounded manor with the odd name of The Oaks houses the late Richard I's wife and descendants. Two nameless houses complete the set, one located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the other in the South Georgia swamps. The former is inhabited by Founding Brother Edwin Carey and his daughter Christina. The latter is, from all reports, empty, falling in, possibly haunted by a few particularly angry ghosts. The family's two "unofficial" residences are Allegan's Island, a bit of land the Richards claim Richard I owned before the break with the Virginia Careys on which Richard I died, and "the Townhouse", a building in magical Savannah proper, where most of the family's parties are held.

The Savannah Careys are traditional allies of the Charleston Careys because of their near-simulaneous formations, but the alliance has been under strain since the current patriarch's ascention owing to his mother being the matriarch of the St. Martin family, the Charleston Careys' traditional worst enemy. The resulting alliance with the St. Martins is similarly shaky for the same reason, and may well fall apart once Eileen dies or is deposed by one of her stepsons. Relations with the North Carolina Careys, never better than uneasy, and have been much more unstable than usual since the Savannah Careys discovered that they were expected to accept Andrew Carey's half-blood daughter as one of their own. Edwardius, the last patriarch, established an alliance with the Raines family before his death, but it supposedly fell apart shortly after his unexpected death. Other arguable allies include the Robinonds and the Vaughns. Because of an incident involving property rights that lead to Richard I's death, the Savannah Careys dislike the Tallows, but no outright feud has ever been declared because: 1) both combatants in the duel died, 2) the modern Tallows live at the opposite end of the country, and 3) the Careys got what they wanted back then, anyway.

The current branch-patriarch is Alasdair Carey II. His wife, Lorena (née Vaughn) is institutionalized, as she has been for most of the past six years. In spite of the numerous pregnancies and stillbirths that proved the ruin of her physical and mental health, the pair has only three children, teenaged daughters Gwenhwyfar and Morgaine and seven-year-old son Edmond. The girls' rebellion, coupled with issues arising from the political policies of former ward Andrew, have formed the bulk of Alasdair's problems for the past four years. Edmond is his heir apparent, but nervous murmurs inside the Council point to Alasdair's niece Cornelia or even one of the girls as a more likely candidate.

Anthony Carey II's eldest son, Alasdair, was married young to a level-headed Welsh girl, Gwenhwyfar Llewellyn, in the hopes that she would provide a stabling influence on him. They had three sons, Richard, Antonius, and Edwin, before dying young within two days of each other. The boys were raised by their Uncle Anthony and Aunt Hermia. When their uncle died, Richard challenged his cousin Anthony IV for the patriarchy, calling it his by right because his father had been born a good five years before Anthony's. When Thomas took the position over both their heads, Richard and his wife Cassandra, Antonius and his wife Constance, and Edwin headed south. Working from the wizarding village of Ellegher, Georgia, the splinter group got a small fortune from the Dahlonega gold mines and Edwin got a wife, mayor's daughter Rose Marie Ellegher. Heading further south, they established themselves on the coast and came to be known as the Savannah Careys.

Richard and "Cassie" had only one son, Richard II, before Richard died dueling Everett Tallow. Richard "Junior" Carey II married Valarie and had a son, Richard III. Richard III and his wife Edena had the customary son Richard "Clarence" Carey IV, then, years later, decided to have another child when a rumor started that the first might be disowned; the result was Aurora Carey.

Antonius and Constance had two children, Annabel and Edwardius. Annabel made a conventional marriage and currently has very little contact with her family. Edwardius married Theodora shortly after being named heir over his cousin Richard and had two children, Edmund and Rosamund, before Theodora's death. He reluctantly married again, this time to Eileen Robinond, a Louisiana beauty only seven years older than his son. Their fairly wretched nineteen years of marriage produced only one child, son Alasdair. Edmund, run out of the country and still hiding from his half-brother in Mexico, married Carlota Santiago and had two daughters, Theodora and Cornelia. Theodora married Wilhelm Van Deventer and had two children, Elise and Nicolas. Cornelia chose to remain single and so have a shot at the top job after her uncle's death. Rosamund married Benjamin Raines, with whom she had a daughter, Amelia Theodora, before his disownment. Rosamund herself vanished three years later, and has not been heard from since; general opinion has her dead. After his first, childless marriage to Serena Marcoli ended with her death, Alasdair was briefly engaged to India Raines before abruptly marrying Lorena Vaughn. Their children are Gwenhwyfar Elaine (fifteen), Morgaine Victoria (thirteen), and Edmond Alasdair (eight).

Edwin's unconventional marriage to Rose Marie produced two daughters, Christina and Cynthia, before Rose Marie left her husband shortly after their seventy-fourth wedding anniversary. They are still legally married, but have not laid eyes on each other, called, or written in over twenty years. Christina, an ambitious old maid, lives with her father in virtual exile in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Cynthia caused a scandal by marrying distant cousin Laurence Carey, the patriarch of the North Carolina Careys. Their children, Melanie and Andrew, proved the family tragedy and the family disgrace, the former dying young because of the latter's short marriage to a Muggle woman. The Savannah Careys refuse to acknowledge that Andrew's daughter Amber is related to them in any way because of the Muggle half of her genetic makeup.
