OOC: Salem Institute of Magical Crafts was officially launched sometime in mid-2003 (Terrigena page officially working from April 15, first IC post on that page was written on June 24 by Professor Blake Dobbs). Created and started by William Cromwell, the site is now run by Selina Skies. BIC:

The Salem Institute of Magical Crafts has been one most prestigious school of magic in America. It has been providing quality education to students across the country for over three centuries, and maintains a sterling reputation. The school, set near the muggle town of Salem, Massachusetts, has produced generations of fine witches and wizards, escalating its place in the magical community, and the wizarding world.

Salem is settled in a serene valley and surrounded by a thick, enchanted forest. Flags fly from the Victorian style towers at each of the four corners of the mansion. Students of the four school houses dwell in these towers, for each tower contains the dormitories and common areas of a specific house. Expansive grounds stretch around the building, and a Quidditch field behind the mansion gleams brilliant green.

For all of those who attend Salem, the school becomes a place of great joy and learning. Its hallowed halls have seen the passing of years and endured the ravishing of time. As Salem is the oldest school in America, most pureblood families living in the United States choose to send their children. International students too have been attracted by the fine reputation of the school.
Yet Muggleborns and Half-bloods are welcome as well, for the Salem Institute of Magical Crafts never turns down a promising pupil. The school holds many secrets and entertains many intrigues, but it is, first and foremost, a place of learning.
Truly Mars Ermer, a former Head of the Magical Cabinet, said it best when he stated, “Salem, why, that’s the best place on earth for young witches and wizards. Gives them structure, and teaches enough so no one falls off a cliff when they enter the magical community.”

Salem, like most Magical Academic Institutions, comes with a well-equipt Library and Infirmary, and, perhaps most importantly of all, a full sized Quidditch Pitch where the students of its four houses pit their teams against each other in a yearly school tournament.

Note: The school tournament has not been held during the last two years due to the events resulting from Salem being compromised. It has nothing to do with the W.A.I.L. campaign regardless of rumour. Salem upholds the rights of all students to follow their own path, so long as they conduct themselves responsibly.

Places of Interest

Also, although not part of the school itself, Baron Hollow is well worth the visit both for its history as an early American magical town, for its association with smugglers, and in more recent times, as a Magical University town.

Recent History

Salem Institute's location was amongst several other Magical places compromised during the recent outing of the Wizarding World in America. While not all believed there to be any truth to the talk of magic, enough did that there was a severe backlash and even an attack upon the school itself.
